A pair of drivers in Massachusetts died at the scene of a crash Saturday morning after one drove southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 95.
Massachusetts State Police were on their way to respond to calls reporting the wrong-way driver when they received word of the crash, which happened near the I-95 exits onto Massachusetts State Route 225 near Lexington, Massachusetts.
The driver of a 2019 Toyota Prius was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when they hit a 2001 Toyota RAV4 head-on near the exit. The RAV4 proceeded to roll over onto its driver’s side and burst into flames, MSP said.
Responding firefighters got both drivers out of their cars but were pronounced dead at the scene. State police did not provide identifying information for either driver.
Police are still investigating why the Prius driver was going the wrong way.
Northbound traffic on I-95 was stopped at the exit for hours after the crash, with the road being reopened at 6:43 a.m.
