A Bend, Oregon, man who went missing on Christmas Day was found alive and in good condition in a dry well inside a gated storage unit facility, local police said.

John M. McLerran, 34, was reported missing after going out for coffee Monday, leaving his wallet and identification behind, the Bend Police Department said in a news release.

The owner of Norton Street Storage found Mr. McLerran inside the well on Wednesday at about 3:07 p.m. local time. The unnamed owner recognized Mr. McLerran because he had rented a unit at the facility the week prior, according to the Bend Bulletin.

Officers were able to extract Mr. McLerran from the well with the help of Bend Fire & Rescue, police said.

“Officers reviewed that footage and determined that Mr. McLerran — it appears that he entered the hole on his own, and he didn’t fall into it,” Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller told KTVZ-TV Thursday. The station said the well was 10 to 12 feet deep.

After the rescue, Mr. McLerran was transported to a hospital, police said, and an evaluation found him to be in good condition.
