One person was killed and nine others were wounded Sunday in a mass shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan, police said.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said the gunman, whose name wasn’t shared, was also killed after authorities responded to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Authorities at an afternoon press conference didn’t share the condition of the victims who were injured.
Police said the suspect rammed his car into the church and then began opening fire on the parishioners around 11:15 a.m.
Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said the church was set ablaze in the attack as well.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said, “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi said FBI and ATF agents were heading to the scene to help with local law enforcement.
“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” Ms. Bondi said. “Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”
Grand Blanc is about 50 miles north of Detroit.
