Police in Ohio said they arrested and charged a woman Saturday with purposefully shooting her infant granddaughter in the face.
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office said it took Mia Desiree Harris, 43, into custody on charges of felonious assault around 1:50 a.m. Saturday after the suspect fled the scene in Liberty Township.
Sheriff Richard Jones said Ms. Harris had opened fire on other relatives, including the baby’s mother, after getting into an argument with them.
Prosecutors on Monday said she shot through a locked bedroom door just before turning her sights on the infant.
The child was shot in the eye. She underwent two surgeries and remains in critical condition.
“It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose,” Sheriff Jones told Cincinnati Fox affiliate WXIX-TV. “This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother.”
Ms. Harris is being held on a $1.5 million bond.
