Police in North Olmsted, Ohio, arrested an off-duty Cleveland Police Department officer accused of operating a vehicle under the influence and crashing into a pizza parlor.
Gary Eugene Kane II is accused of striking the north side of Romeo’s Pizza at 2:46 a.m. Wednesday, according to a North Olmsted Police Department report cited by Cleveland’s WKYC. The police didn’t mention whether anyone was in the restaurant.
North Olmsted officers said in the report that Mr. Kane smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and his Volkswagen Jetta was still running when they arrived. He purportedly refused field sobriety tests and wouldn’t take a blood test at the hospital, according to the TV station.
Cleveland Division of Police Deputy Chief Jarod Schlacht told WOIO that Mr. Kane, a Cleveland cop since 2015, was off duty at the time and that he is “on restricted duty pending the adjudication of the case.”
Mr. Kane appeared in a North Olmsted courtroom Thursday for an arraignment and is due back in court on Sept. 11, according to court records.
