Oakland police on Friday said a California man tried to drive away from a group of thieves before the suspects flipped his car and robbed him at gunpoint.
Authorities said the male victim noticed three other cars trying to box him into a parking lot around dawn Friday, so the victim drove off and the thieves sped after him.
One of the suspects crashed into and flipped the victim’s car over, police said. A gunman then emerged from one of the pursuing cars and robbed the victim.
Authorities said the thieves opened fire as they drove away, but no one was injured in the shooting.
NBC Bay Area reported that the victim was the owner of a Chinese restaurant.
Another business owner named Jimmy, who works near where the victim was robbed, said Asians are being increasingly targeted.
“Out there, the mentality [is] Asians got cash. No, not every Asian carries cash. Yet being targeted and it’s unfair. It’s really unfair. We live, we work here, we try to make a living. But it happens on a weekly basis,” Jimmy told the station.
