The Washington Times is pleased to announce that Miles Yu has joined the newspaper as a regular Commentary section columnist and contributor to the Times’ national security newsletter Threat Status.

An internationally recognized expert on China affairs, Mr. Yu will provide important insights for our readers on a biweekly basis through his column Red Horizon. The column will explore the most important challenge facing the United States today: The People’s Republic of China.

Mr. Yu is currently a professor of East Asia and military and naval history at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He is also director of the China Center at the Hudson Institute and a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Born Yu Maochun, Mr. Yu began life in Anhui Province China, amid the turmoil of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, when Red Guard zealots roamed the country trashing and killing all vestiges of tradition and capitalism in the country.

Mr. Yu served most recently during the first Trump administration as principal China policy and planning adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The position was a key part of the State Department Policy Planning staff.

During that period, Mr. Yu was instrumental in carrying out a major shift in U.S. policy toward China that for the first time in about 40 years recognized Beijing as a major strategic competitor of the United States. The policy shift has endured in Washington under the Biden administration and has become widely recognized among America’s numerous allies and partners.

“I very much look forward to writing columns on the strategic challenges posed by China,” Mr. Yu said.

“Miles is a tremendous addition to our team of national security and foreign affairs columnists,” said Chris Dolan, executive editor of The Washington Times.
