NextImg:No invite to the Vance family to see vice president residence

The day of the inauguration will be the first day that Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and his family will see the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory since no invitation has been extended to them to take a look ahead of time.

Sources familiar with phone calls told CBS News that Usha Vance through intermediaries reached out to the mansion-style house’s staff in November to see how her family of three young children could prepare. The request was originally pushed aside, but eventually a path of communication was started between Navy aides and the Vance family’s people.

The Vances have since been provided with the house’s layout and other details about moving in. And Ms. Vance did speak with Doug Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, last week, and a source said arrangements were being made for the Vance children.

It’s normal to invite the incoming vice president’s family to visit the home, but Ms. Harris never viewed the mansion before she was set to move in and take over the residence from former Vice President Mike Pence. At the time, outgoing President Donald Trump was contesting the results of the 2020 election, plus the COVID-19 pandemic was ongoing.

Before them, Vice President Joe Biden invited the Pences to check out the space in 2016, and Mr. Pence said they were “just very grateful for the hospitality.” So did Vice President Dick Cheney in 2008 when it was the Bidens’ turn to move in. According to White House archives, Mr. Biden spent nearly an hour with Mr. Cheney at the residence.

People close to Ms. Harris defended her decision to not extend an invite, CBS reported, as she has been focused on other issues, like the wildfires in California.

An adviser to Mr. Vance told CNN that Ms. Harris and the vice president-elect haven’t spoken since the November election.
