D.C. prosecutors on Thursday said they won’t bring charges against a U.S. Park Police officer who shot and killed a fleeing teenage driver in the Northeast part of the city after the cop became trapped in the backseat of the boy’s car.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said there wasn’t enough evidence to criminally charge the officer in the shooting of 17-year-old Dalaneo Martin.

Authorities said that on March 18, 2023, the officer, who wasn’t identified, joined another cop to inspect a suspicious vehicle on the 3400 block of Baker Street Northeast.

The two officers found the teen boy sleeping in the driver’s seat of the car, which had an unregistered license plate attached and a punched ignition.

The officers made a plan to remove Dalaneo from the vehicle, and one of them hopped in the back of the car to take his position.

Authorities said Dalaneo was startled awake at one point and a struggle followed. The teen then put the car in drive and sped off with the USPP officer in the backseat.

Prosecutors said the officer ordered Dalaneo several times to stop the car and let him out — which the teen ignored — until the cop eventually said, “Stop or I’ll shoot.”

The officer then shot Dalaneo five times as he was driving near the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and 36th Street.

Officials said the car then veered off 36th Street NE and crashed into a house. Dalaneo was pronounced dead at the scene.

“After a careful, thorough and independent review of the evidence, federal prosecutors have found insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the United State Park Police officer is criminally liable for Mr. Martin’s death,” the attorney’s office said in a press release.
