The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday opened an investigation into 870,000 cars manufactured by General Motors after receiving reports of engine failure.
The probe covers GM vehicles manufactured between 2019 and 2024 with the company’s L87 V8 engine. The investigation, led by the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation unit, is preliminary and meant to establish the severity of the issue.
According to the agency, customers complained about bearing rod problems that could lead to engine failure. Engine malfunctions or loss of power can boost the chance of a crash, the unit said.
While the regulator has received 39 customer complaints, NHTSA investigators reported that it hasn’t received any crash reports related to the engine failures.
Customers who complained said no warning signs came before complete engine failure.
The vehicles involved in the investigation are the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.
