Police in northern Florida are investigating the discovery of an abandoned newborn baby — with the umbilical cord still attached — in a woman’s backyard.
Palatka police said the woman first phoned police at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday after discovering the baby wrapped in a blanket behind her home.
Responding officers called emergency services and the baby was taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities said evidence inside the home showed the baby was delivered there by a 15-year-old girl. The young mother also lives in the home, according to police.
The baby is doing well and is in stable condition.
Police said the woman told officers that she didn’t know where the child came from, or who left it in her backyard.
Police said the investigation into the abandoned infant is still ongoing.
