A father from Ulster Park, New York, who was hiking with his daughter was found dead on Maine’s Mount Katahdin on Tuesday. She is still missing.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said on Facebook that Tim Keiderling, 58, and Esther Keiderling, 28, left their campground to hike the mountain, which is inside Baxter State Park, at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday.
Park rangers began searching for the pair after their vehicle was found Monday, parked at the trailhead where they had left it. Mr. Keiderling’s body was found near the summit of Mount Katahdin Tuesday afternoon. Maine DIFW officials didn’t say what caused his death.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Ms. Keiderling had not been found, the officials said.
“No one has had a brother like mine. Tim lived exuberantly. He loved life, loved people, loved God. … My heart is broken for his wife and children. Our family is so grateful to the park rangers, state police, all the interagency first responders who searched for my brother. They have our prayers as they continue to search for Esther,” Mr. Keiderling’s brother Joe Keiderling told Maine’s WMTW.
All trailheads on Mount Katahdin are closed until further notice, according to ABC News.
