New York City’s migrant shelter at the Roosevelt Hotel, which had become a symbol of the Biden border crisis, will soon be shut down, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday.

The shelter had become a nexus of crime, including the high-profile beating of two cops last year. It also at one point housed the migrant who murdered Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student whose death last year galvanized the immigration debate.

Mr. Adams said the hotel’s closure is a sign of improvements in the border situation.

“While we’re not done caring for those who come into our care, today marks another milestone in demonstrating the immense progress we have achieved in turning the corner on an unprecedented international humanitarian effort,” the Democratic mayor said

The hotel was opened as a shelter in May 2023 and processed more than 173,000 migrants.

Its closure tracks with similar shutdowns across the country, where officials say the flow of new migrants has virtually dried up. Experts say President Trump’s new border policies are responsible for the massive change.
