The New York City Fire Department rescued a construction worker from a deep hole at a site in the Hudson Yards neighborhood this week.

FDNY said on social media that the worker fell into the hole at 605 West 30th St. in Manhattan around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The FDNY Rescue Company 1 had been to the site last week for drills, the agency said.

Fire officials did not name the man, who was injured when he clipped his head on a piece of machinery. Responding personnel used ropes to extract him.

“We were walking on bedrock or granite, and the other half was two feet of mud that you would sink right up to your knees in. Accessing the worker was a little tricky. We resorted to using ropes, which seemed to be the most efficient way of getting him out … It was about a 60-foot-deep excavation,” Rescue 1 Lt. John McCann said.

The worker fell when the piece of machinery “blew off the wall” and clipped him, Lt. McCann said.

FDNY transported the worker to a hospital in critical condition.
