New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who backs Nikki Haley for president, called for caution Sunday over Donald Trump’s claim that presidents have “total immunity” from prosecution for actions taken during their terms.

Mr. Trump says presidents need “total immunity from prosecution, even for things that cross the line,” and his attorneys have argued in court that that privilege could extend to killing political rivals.

“I don’t care what political party you’re from, whether you’re an extreme conservative or a socialist liberal, everybody should be concerned with that type of mentality going into the White House,” Mr. Sununu said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

At a campaign stump in New Hampshire over the weekend in the final days before New Hampshire’s primary election, Mr. Trump told supporters that presidents have to “have immunity so that that president can act, and do what he feels, and what his group of advisers feel is the absolute right thing.”

“Otherwise, you’re going to have presidents that are totally impotent,” the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination added.

Mr. Sununu said the “amazing thing about that clip is he was dead serious.”

“He wasn’t even making one of his ridiculous jokes,” the Republican governor said. “He was dead serious about that.”
