The Navy said a body found this week in the woods in Norfolk has been identified as that of a missing sailor and another sailor is in custody in connection with the death.

Seaman Angelina Resendiz, a culinary specialist, was based at Norfolk Naval Station and last seen alive on May 29. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service said on social media that it found her body on Monday and confirmed her identity Tuesday.

NCIS said another sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in connection with Seaman Resendiz’s death and charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice are pending. The agency did not identify the sailor or divulge the cause of Seaman Resendiz’s death.

Seaman Resendiz’s family said authorities were too slow in letting them know about her disappearance, calling for change.

“The family demands accountability for oversight that put her life at risk and for mishandling that delayed justice, emphasizing the urgent need to address how official channels failed to notify them promptly and properly, relying instead on unofficial sources like the media, which underscores deep systemic failures,” a family spokesperson told WTKR-TV.

Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat, told WVEC-TV: “I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Angelina Resendiz, a sailor assigned to Naval Station Norfolk, and I’m praying for her family. I appreciate the Navy and law enforcement officers who are investigating the situation and urge them to get answers to her family as soon as possible.”
