The Navy on Wednesday called off the search for a sailor who went missing in the Timor Sea between Australia, Indonesia and East Timor earlier this week.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington and other ships in Carrier Strike Group 5, part of the U.S. 7th Fleet, began searching Monday after getting word that a sailor might have gone overboard, the 7th Fleet said in a release.

Australian military and border patrol personnel also assisted in the search effort. The USS George Washington is in the Timor Sea as part of the multinational Talisman Sabre 2025 exercise, according to USNI News, the news service of the U.S. Naval Institute.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon said in a statement that “the U.S. Navy suspended the active search for a sailor assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington,” according to military newspaper Stars & Stripes.

The military has not identified the sailor publicly; the Navy is withholding the name of the missing sailor until 24 hours after their next of kin are notified, according to Stars & Stripes.

USS George Washington expresses sincere condolences to those impacted by this loss and is actively engaged with the crew to make services available to tend to their needs during this challenging time,” Lt. Cmdr. Mark Langford, USS George Washington spokesperson, told USNI News.
