National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan dodged questions Sunday about whether there should be conditions on U.S. aid to Israel amid its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The question, posed by CBS’ “Face the Nation,” comes amid growing calls within the Democratic Party for a longer-term cease-fire due to large civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.

Mr. Sullivan called a cease-fire a “worthwhile thought.”

“The president made clear in his comments that he thought the approach that he is taking, is the approach that has generated the results that we have seen so far,” Mr. Sullivan said. “And he is going to continue to engage in exactly that kind of diplomacy.”

He added that he believes the pause in fighting “is all the result of American diplomacy that was not inevitable.”
