Police in Southern California arrested multiple teens for their roles in a moblike beatdown of three Marines over the weekend that went viral.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday said it charged four juvenile boys and one juvenile girl for assault with a deadly weapon in connection to the attack in San Clemente.
Authorities said the four arrested juveniles were booked into the Orange County Juvenile Hall. Due to the suspects being underage, their identities haven’t been made public.
“This is considered an assault with a deadly weapon because of the amount of suspects we are investigating,” Sgt. Frank Gonzalez said over the weekend when the investigation was opened. “The weapons that were used were their feet while these victims were on the ground.”
San Clemente Mayor Chris Duncan told KCBS-TV that four additional juveniles were charged with misdemeanor assault.
“They typically don’t take juveniles into custody for misdemeanors,” Mr. Duncan told the station. “They will go through the process out of custody.”
The incident took place around 9:50 p.m. Friday by the San Clemente Pier when the Marines told what appeared to be a large group of teens to stop setting off fireworks.
Viral video of the altercation shows the three Marines, who are out of uniform, walking away from the teens until one of the juveniles strikes one of the servicemen from behind.
The Marine then rushes after the teen and is jumped by the crowd of about a dozen young people. Another Marine joins the fracas, and he too is overtaken by the group. Both Marines are seen in the fetal position trying to protect themselves from being kicked in the video.
“I didn’t know what was going on. I was just trying to go back to the car and then I had turned around … to help them out. And then we’re just all in this circle being stomped on, beat up,” Hunter Antonino, one of the Marines, told CBS News.
