Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she plans to force a vote to impeach President Biden for his handling of the southern border, arguing that booting the president is what Congress “should be doing.”
Ms. Greene, of Georgia, told reporters on Monday that she planned to pitch her impeachment push to fellow Republicans during their weekly conference meeting on Tuesday morning, and also wanted a meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican.
She said she intended to force a vote on the impeachment articles with a privileged resolution, which is Capitol Hill jargon for a measure that forces a floor vote without the blessing of the speaker.
“I’m happy to force everyone up here to vote, because that’s what we should be doing,” Ms. Greene said.
Impeachment pushes against Mr. Biden — including previous efforts by Ms. Greene — have come and gone throughout the GOP’s control of the House. Republicans did vote to open an impeachment inquiry into the president for his ties to his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings, but the effort has not yielded a floor vote to oust Mr. Biden.
Ms. Greene’s ire was directed at Mr. Biden’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border, in particular his plan to issue executive orders on Tuesday to partially shut down asylum processing on the border.
She was also angry about last week’s guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump, and accused the Biden administration of jailing his political opponents.
“You know what, Republicans need to grow a spine. They need to learn that this is our country,” Ms. Greene said. “Our America that we knew is gone, because Democrats are willing to put every single one of their political opponents in prison.”
“That’s what I’m gonna talk to Speaker Johnson about. Does he actually really support President Trump? Does he actually mean what he says? And if so, he needs to leave this conference to do it,” she said.
