The mothers of two Las Vegas teens accused of killing a bicyclist in an intentional crash spoke to the media Wednesday for the first time since their boys were charged.
The mother of Jesus Ayala, the 17-year-old driver charged with murder in the death of retired police Chief Andreas Probst, told local CBS affiliate KLAS-TV, “I don’t know why he did this. … I don’t know if God can forgive this.”
Jesus had his last court appearance as a juvenile Tuesday, as he will now face his murder charge as an adult. Police said they arrested Jesus on the day of the incident.
The mother of Jzamir Keys, the 16-year-old passenger who is said to have recorded the video that went viral, told KLAS in a text, “My son’s side of the story will be told, ‘the truth,’ not the inaccuracies the media will try to portray.”
Police said they arrested Jzamir on Tuesday. He is expected to face an attempted murder charge as an adult as well.
Authorities said the pair were in the midst of a crime spree when they recorded themselves intentionally striking and killing Probst on Aug. 14.
One of the teens can be heard saying, “Ready?” The other egged on the ramming by saying, “Hit his a—.”
The driver then sped behind Probst and slammed into the cyclist, causing the 64-year-old victim to roll over the top of the car and land on the pavement.
The video shows Probst lying lifeless on the ground as the two drive away. One of them says, “This n——- knocked out,” and the other replies, “Oh s—-, we gotta get out of here.”
Probst died at a hospital later. He moved to Las Vegas after retiring as a police chief in Bell, California, in 2009.
Police said Jzamir was driving the car earlier in the day when he struck a 72-year-old man. The victim survived the crash.
The teens also were accused of stealing four cars that day.
The 50-second clip shows the suspects intentionally crash into another car during their alleged crime spree.
