NextImg:Morgan State to wall off 90% of its campus after homecoming week shooting

In light of a shooting last week that left five injured amid homecoming activities, Baltimore’s Morgan State University is enclosing 90% of its campus.

The move, which will extend existing barriers by 8,000 feet, was announced by Morgan State President David Wilson in a university town hall Tuesday night.

“We are exploring as a goal to enclose 90% of the campus in order to eliminate unfettered access. We’re doing this, let me be clear, not to keep out our neighbors and our community at large; we’re doing it to keep out the bad actors,” Mr. Wilson said.

The extension of the existing wall will be secure and decorative, in line with other universities nationwide. The increased enclosure would leave two or three points of exit and entry, staffed by security personnel, Mr. Wilson explained.

Morgan State will request $22 million from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and the state’s congressional delegation to help pay for the first phase of the upgrades, which would also include more metal detectors and increasing patrols by university police.

The shooting on Oct. 3 injured four students and another person. All five have been released from the hospital.

A $9,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and charging of the suspects in the shooting has been proffered by Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

On Tuesday, the Baltimore Police Department posted new images of the suspects on Facebook.

After the shooting, Morgan State canceled classes for the week along with most homecoming activities, including the football game.
