Federal authorities arrested a Missouri prison escapee in Pennsylvania on Thursday after the child molestation suspect had been on the lam for nearly four months.
U.S. Marshals took Mario Che-Tiul, 34, into custody in Chester County following a tip that the escapee was hiding in an apartment in Avondale — nearly 1,200 miles from the southwestern Missouri jail he broke out of in June.
“This latest capture of an escaped prisoner from Missouri should underscore a very clear message, and one that applies globally: our efforts never cease. Ever,” said U.S. Marshal Eric Gartner for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Che-Tiul was one of seven prisoners who conducted a violent jailbreak from the Barry County Jail on June 1.
Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd said at the time that one of the inmates told a correctional officer that he needed his blood pressure checked.
That’s when the inmates “grabbed them from behind and literally choked them out till they passed out,” Sheriff Boyd said, according to Springfield NBC affiliate KYTV.
Six of the prisoners were captured within the first 24 hours after the escape. But Che-Tiul, who was booked on charges of child molestation, incest and assault, remained at-large.
Prosecutors in Missouri said they charged Che-Tiul with two counts of assault, kidnapping and escape following the jailbreak.
Che-Tiul was apprehended near the same area where Danelo Cavalcante was captured.
The convicted murderer broke out of a Chester County jail on Aug. 31 and was the focus of an intense, two-week manhunt throughout the Philadelphia exurbs. He was captured Sept. 13.
