A Michigan woman who vanished while hiking in California has been found dead, having been declared missing more than two weeks ago.

Ann Herford was last seen alive on Nov. 12 and had been reported missing on Nov. 14 before her car was found at the trailhead of the Arnold Rim Trail System on Nov. 15, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ms. Herford, a traveling nurse, was overdue to report for work at Adventist Health Sonora in Sonora, California, at the time she was reported missing, according to local news site myMotherLode.com.

On Thursday at about 9 a.m., sheriff’s office personnel and rescue volunteers finally found her body in a steep, heavily wooded area outside the trail system north of the trailhead where her car was parked, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

Because of the treacherous terrain, Ms. Herford‘s body had to be airlifted from the area.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death will continue, the sheriff’s office said, adding that they believe that “her tragic death is not suspicious.”
