Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Sunday it would behoove President Biden’s reelection and the campaigns of Democrats nationwide in November if he were more outspoken on access to abortion.

“I think people want to know that this is a president that is fighting,” Ms. Whitmer, a Democrat, said on ABC’s “This Week.” “To use maybe more blunt language, maybe that would be helpful.”

Mr. Biden has said that while he’s “not big on abortion” because of his Catholic faith, he thinks national access under Roe v. Wade before it was overturned “got it right.”

The contentious issue has buoyed Democrats at the ballot box in recent elections, as red states look to limit access to the medical procedure.

Michigan voters last year enshrined abortion access to the battleground state’s constitution but is restricted after viability.

“We’ve got to be very clear about how high the stakes are and why our priorities are,” Ms. Whitmer said. “I always think there’s more work to do on that front.”
