Miami Beach police said an officer shot another officer Saturday while both were running down an armed suspect.
Authorities said the officer was hit in the leg by his colleague’s gunfire around 12:30 p.m. as they were chasing after a man on the Venetian Causeway — the bridge that links Miami Beach with mainland Miami.
The wounded officer is in stable condition and recovering at a hospital, police said.
Police also said they detained the suspect at the scene without announcing charges.
Witness Jeremy Mohler told NBC affiliate WTVJ that he was jogging on the causeway when he saw the suspect arguing with a female police officer.
“It looked like he was having some issues and was being aggressive with her, at least vocally, and she just jumped out the car and ran with a gun right by me,” Mr. Mohler told the station.
Moments later, he said he heard a gunshot and saw a male officer wounded on the ground.
Police confirmed the confrontation wasn’t related to Miami Beach’s typically raucous spring break season.
