An errant shopping cart on the tracks of Metrorail’s Red Line in Northeast D.C. was struck by a train Friday night, leaving around 160 passengers stranded for an hour.

At around 8 p.m., a train leaving the Rhode Island Avenue station to the Brookland-Catholic University station struck the shopping cart, disabling the train.

A rescue train was then sent to evacuate the passengers, arriving at the train at around 8:46 p.m. and returning with the roughly 160 evacuees back to the Rhode Island Avenue station by 9:06 p.m., D.C. Fire and EMS posted on X.

No one was injured or needed medical attention, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority told WJLA-TV. Officials did not say how a shopping cart got onto the train tracks in the first place.

Delays continued on the Red line for another few hours afterward, with single tracking being lifted at around 11:34 p.m. and normal service resuming outside the Rhode Island Avenue station at around 12:50 a.m. Saturday, shortly before the system closed for the night.
