The D.C. Metro on Tuesday said it will temporarily halt service to multiple Red Line stations in December to undergo safety and other renovations.
Farragut North, Metro Center and Gallery Place stations will be closed to Red Line trips as Metro repairs tunnel and track infrastructure, upgrades communication systems and installs new platform edge lights.
The construction project is expected to last from Dec. 18-30.
Rail riders can still access the Blue, Orange and Silver lines at Metro Center during the construction. The same goes for passengers on the Green and Yellow lines at Gallery Place.
Metro said the Judiciary Square station also will be closed from Dec. 22-24.
The transit system said it is addressing “structural issues in the tunnels” that are nearly 50 years old.
“The work will involve building supports to repair a concrete beam overhead,” Metro said. “Crews will need to remove the concrete and pour approximately 1,000 square feet of concrete for the new beam, reinforced with additional rebar.”
Metro said riders should still expect regular service to other Red Line stations during the construction period.
