Police in Memphis, Tennessee, said Monday a driver snatched the firearm away from a would-be carjacker and held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived.
Authorities said they arrested 18-year-old Derrion Turner Sunday night after the suspect was accused of trying to rob a man for his 2022 Dodge Charger at the Fill-N-Go gas station on South 3rd Street.
Mr. Turner was moving toward the driver seat when the victim grabbed the suspect from behind and wrestled over the carjacker’s weapon, according to police.
One bullet was fired into the Charger during the struggle. Police said the driver then yanked the gun away and kept the suspect on the ground until authorities arrived to arrest Mr. Turner.
The suspect was charged with carjacking, robbery and firearm offenses, police said.
Police said Mr. Turner admitted to trying to carjack the Dodge Charger and said he held up a woman at gunpoint on Aug. 31.
According to police, the female victim had her iPhone, $750 and Nissan Rogue stolen in that incident.
