NextImg:Memorial Day messages from Democrat lawmakers mix up military observances

Two members of the Squad got their military observances mixed up Monday.

Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Cori Bush of Missouri each put out a post on the social-media site X saying that Memorial Day is an occasion for making sure America provides veterans with earned post-military benefits.

“On #MemorialDay, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country. We owe them more than our gratitude — they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and benefits they were promised,” Ms. Omar wrote.

Ms. Bush went further, saying Memorial Day is also an occasion to work for socialized medicine.

“This #MemorialDay & every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis. We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational & economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence,” Ms. Bush wrote.

However, as many quickly noted, Memorial Day memorializes the dead, for whom housing, health care and other benefits that veterans have earned are of little value.

“So do any of the squad members actually know what Memorial Day is about?” conservative X user AGHamilton 29 asked in exasperation.

Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May and honors those U.S. military members who died in service of their country. By contrast, Veterans Day, which falls annually on Nov. 11, honors all who served.

The two women deleted the posts, though not before they had been screengrabbed and shared across social media. By mid-afternoon Ms. Bush had posted a more-fitting tweet and Ms. Omar had done the same on a diffferent account.
