Incoming first lady Melania Trump says she is hopeful the country will come together after a tense campaign marked by two assassination attempts on her husband.

Mrs. Trump reflected on the threats against President-elect Donald Trump during a sit-down with “Fox and Friends,” a rare media appearance for the former and future first lady.

“I hope the country will be united, that’s what we all hope for. I’m always against violence, I think nothing is accomplished with the violence,” she said.

Mrs. Trump has kept a relatively low profile during her husband’s political career but has sometimes entered the spotlight, even publishing a memoir this past year. She is returning to the White House after a first term that included a renovation of the Rose Garden and a youth empowerment and safety program known as “Be Best.”

During her interview, Mrs. Trump said she is proud of her son, Barron Trump, who is a freshman at New York University and must contend with the notoriety of having Secret Service protection and famous parents.

“He’s very strong and he knows that he’s in a different position than other children,” Mrs. Trump said. “I just say [to him], ’Make your dreams come true, this is your road, your life.’”

Mrs. Trump shared a laugh over Mr. Trump’s famous arm-pumping dance to “YMCA,” which is being mimicked by athletes and others.

“This is a very special and unique dance,” she said. “I think a lot of people are copying it.”

A Fox host asked if that is how she dances.

“No,” she said.
