House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday that the House will launch an impeachment inquiry of President Biden, focusing on his alleged involvement while he was vice president in his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
“House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,” said Mr. McCarthy, California Republican. “Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”
Mr. McCarthy said there are “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption.”
“They warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives. That’s why today I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” he said.
The probe will be led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, Kentucky Republican, in coordination with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith of Missouri.
White House spokesman Ian Sams called the move “extreme politics at its worst.”
“House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they’ve turned up no evidence of wrongdoing,” Mr. Sams posted on X, formerly Twitter.
