Officials in Charles County, Maryland, said a 5-year-old boy died Friday after strong winds lifted a bounce house into the air and caused two children to fall from it.

Authorities said the bounce house went airborne around 9:20 p.m. Friday in Regency Furniture Stadium, where the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs minor league baseball team was playing.

The children fell from the bounce house when it was roughly 15 to 20 feet in the air, officials said, and it eventually crashed in the outfield of the baseball diamond.

Medical personnel stationed at the game as well as athletic trainers rushed to aid the children.    

The 5-year-old boy was flown to a hospital in the District, where he later died.

The other child who fell out of the house suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

“We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,” Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben Collins said in a statement. “We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”

The Blue Crabs postponed their games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in light of the tragedy and are offering counseling for players and fans who witnessed the incident.

 “Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all,” Blue Crabs General Manager Courtney Knichel said in a statement.
