The Marine Corps on Friday released the names of the five Marines who died Tuesday when their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed in California during a training flight.

The chopper departed Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas and was en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in the San Diego area when it was reported missing. The Marines launched a search and asked for help from agencies, including the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Civil Air Patrol.

Searchers found the downed helicopter Wednesday, officials said.

The Marines identified those who died in the crash as Capt. Benjamin Moulton, 27; Capt. Jack Casey, 26; Capt. Miguel Nava, 28, all pilots; Sgt. Alec Langen, 23, and Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, 21, both crew chiefs.

“We have been confronted with a tragedy that is every service family’s worst fear. Our top priority now is supporting the families of our fallen heroes, and we ask for your respect and understanding as they grieve,” said Lt. Col. Nicholas J. Harvey, commander of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361. “The Flying Tigers family stands strong and includes the friends and community who have supported our squadron during this challenging time. We will get through this together.”

The investigation into the fatal crash is continuing, officials said.
