A man hit another car and veered off the road and through the Arlington Memorial Bridge barrier Thursday, causing his car to fall into the Potomac River. He has since died.
Witness Nigisti Adane saw the incident and took dashcam video that she shared with WJLA-TV and X account DMV News Live.
The video shows a white pickup truck rear-ending another car, crossing the opposite lanes of traffic on the District of Columbia bridge, crashing through the bridge’s wall and falling into the water. D.C. Fire and EMS, U.S. Park Police and others responded to the crash.
“I called at 6:48 [p.m.], and when the cops came it had been 15 minutes at that point. The truck went straight down. I think usually, I assumed that cars would float a little bit, but it looked like it went straight down,” Ms. Adane told WTTG-TV.
The unnamed man inside the submerged pickup was recovered and brought to shore for life support by 8:22 p.m., then taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition, D.C. Fire and EMS said in a pair of posts on X. One person in the other car involved in the crash went to the hospital for minor injuries.
U.S. Park Police confirmed the man’s death in the hospital to WJLA on Friday. The bridge, which was closed to traffic following the crash, was reopened just before 1 a.m. Friday.
