Los Angeles police arrested a man attempting to commandeer a robotaxi in the early hours Thursday.
The man, who has yet to be identified by city authorities, entered a Waymo robotaxi at around 1 a.m., and the automated vehicle’s voice reportedly ordered the man to exit the vehicle, but he refused.
L.A. cops arrived shortly after the man sat in the car. Video of the incident shows the man speaking to police as they approach the vehicle behind riot shields.
The man was eventually dragged out of the car by police and handcuffed.
Waymo has been operating a commercial license in California for years. The Google-owned autonomous taxi company offers local law enforcement extensive training programs to assist police officers in difficult situations.
Still, robotaxis have caused issues for first responders, with police reporting instances of autonomous vehicles blocking traffic, driving in opposite lanes and failing to comply with law enforcement orders.
