A man was arrested by Montgomery County Police over the weekend for trying to attack three people with a machete at a Silver Spring, Maryland, shopping center.

Maikol Darinson Vicente Gomez, 24, is accused of going after three unnamed victims at the Westech Corner shopping center with the machete Sunday. The victims were able to get away to secure locations unharmed, MCPD said in a release Tuesday.

When officers arrived, Mr. Gomez tried to flee, hitting multiple cars with the machete as he ran through the parking lot. He ultimately tripped and fell, losing the blade in the process and was taken into custody by police.

Mr. Gomez, a Hyattsville resident, has been charged with three counts of first-degree assault, a felony. He is being held without bond and is being represented by a public defender, according to court documents.

He has also been charged with three counts of second-degree assault, two counts of malicious destruction of property worth $1,000 or more, one count of disorderly conduct, one count of obstruction and hindrance, one count of resisting arrest and one count of making a false statement to a peace officer, all misdemeanors.
