The League of Women Voters demanded Friday that members of Congress do more to stop President Trump, saying they need to “restore stability to the country.”

In a letter to congressional leaders, the league said Mr. Trump’s executive actions are “causing harm to millions of Americans.”

Congress must do its part to ensure that our great democracy is preserved and safeguarded,” the league said in the letter backed by the national organization and all state branches. “The outcry by Americans who are speaking out against the impact of the executive orders, including those who voted for President Trump, should be all that is needed for Congress to stand in its authority, legislate on behalf of the American people, and restore stability to the country.”

The letter’s complaints track closely with the ones raised by Democrats, who say Mr. Trump overstepped with executive orders limiting birthright citizenship, pausing some federal spending, dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development and cutting the size of the federal bureaucracy.

League leaders also complained that Mr. Trump has allowed Elon Musk and his White House government efficiency office to “access sensitive government systems.”

The letter praised federal courts’ intervention to halt the birthright citizenship changes and Mr. Trump’s spending pause, but said Capitol Hill has been startlingly absent.

Congress must step in,” the league urged.

The letter said Mr. Trump has some leeway to decide how to implement programs and spending that Congress has authorized, but a president can’t decide whether to enact all of them.
