Unions representing hospitality workers in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, voted this week to authorize a strike.

The vote by Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165 was overwhelming, with 95% saying yes, according to the unions on X. Around 53,000 workers voted in the election.

The two unions represent around 60,000 workers in Reno and Las Vegas hotels, casinos and restaurants.

A strike is not inevitable. However, as the unions continue negotiations into next week, the workers can decide at any point to start on the picket line. Around 40,000 of the represented members are working under an expired contract that ended this month.

The unions are asking for better pay, easier working hours and better workplace safety protection.
