A Senate panel advanced President Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, on Thursday.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 14-9 to report her nomination to the full chamber for confirmation.

Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy, Louisiana Republican, said Ms. Chavez-DeRemer would have the support of labor unions and business leaders if she takes charge at the Labor Department.

“If confirmed, she has the opportunity to bring these two groups together to secure a better future for all. That is what she brings to the table. That is why President Trump nominated her,” Mr. Cassidy said. “We have an opportunity to enact a new pro-America agenda that puts workers first. Over the last several weeks, Representative Chavez-DeRemer demonstrated her commitment to this mission.”

During her confirmation hearing, Ms. Chavez-DeRemer, a onetime Republican congresswoman from Oregon, said she would not interfere with right-to-work laws that let workers decline membership in a union.

Democrats urged her to lean into her labor union bona fides and support a higher minimum wage.

The president held his first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, though nominees are still filtering through the Senate.

Mr. Trump’s been successful so far, using a tiebreaking vote from Vice President J.D. Vance to get Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth across the finish line and using the bully pulpit and personal meetings to get other picks confirmed.
