Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she will meet with Jewish leaders and police brass after a Sunday protest outside of a synagogue devolved into a melee between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrators.
Ms. Bass said Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky will join her this week when she speaks with police and Rabbi Noah Farkas, the CEO of the Jewish Federation Los Angeles.
The mayor didn’t specify which day the meeting would happen, but did say she was meeting with Los Angeles police Interim Chief Dominic Choi on Monday to talk more about public safety.
“I want to be clear that Los Angeles will not be a harbor for antisemitism and violence,” the mayor said. “Those responsible for either will be found and held accountable.”
LAPD said “several physical altercations” broke out during the protest in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood.
Police said they received two reports of battery that are still under investigation.
One person was arrested at the demonstration for having a spiked post, police said, and they were cited and later released.
Authorities said they first arrived at the Adas Torah synagogue shortly before 11 a.m. due to reports of protesters blocking the building’s entrance.
Riot gear-clad officers pushed demonstrators away from the synagogue and the two groups of protesters soon clashed in the surrounding streets, which was captured by independent journalist Los Angeles Scanner.
“Intimidating Jewish congregants is dangerous, unconscionable, antisemitic, and un-American,” President Biden said on X. “Americans have a right to peaceful protest. But blocking access to a house of worship – and engaging in violence – is never acceptable.”
Demonstrators gathered outside the synagogue to protest an Israeli real estate event going on inside.
The temple was hosting an Israeli firm that markets properties in the Jewish state and the West Bank settlements.
