Efforts are underway to recover a missing kayaker who is presumed dead in Colorado’s Lake Granby. The man’s kayak capsized due to wind on the lake.

The kayaker is a 21-year-old man from the Denver area, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

At about 6:45 a.m. local time Sunday, the missing man’s friend called 911 to report the incident. The two men weren’t named by law enforcement.

The men in separate canoes were returning to shore after overnighting on the lake’s Deer Island. The capsized kayak flipped due to the wind, and its rider fell into the water.

The caller was unable to save his companion before he went underwater, the sheriff’s office explained. The friend made it back to shore safely.

Responders arrived and found themselves in a snowstorm, with near-zero visibility and choppy waters. Law enforcement didn’t say whether the snowstorm was active when the two men left Deer Island.

Search operations were paused at 2 p.m. Sunday and resumed Monday. Authorities have not made new announcements regarding the recovery of the kayaker.
