The White House said it was “incredibly sad” to hear the Princess of Wales is undergoing treatment for cancer and offered hopes for a full recovery.

The princess, better known as Kate Middleton, released a video message disclosing the diagnosis. She is undergoing chemotherapy, and the princess said she is feeling strong each day.

“Our thoughts are with the Duchess of Cambridge and with her family members and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday. “Certainly we wish her a full recovery.”

Ms. Jean-Pierre said it is important to respect the princess’s privacy, so she could not comment further. She did not “have anything to share” on whether President Biden had plans to speak to the princess.

“We are taking this in, this terrible news, as all of you are,” Ms. Jean-Pierre said.

The princess, who is married to Prince William, said she did not know about the cancer when she had abdominal surgery in January.

“However tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” the princess said in her video message.

The princess was absent from the public eye for a lengthy period, leading to conspiracy theories about her condition.
