White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday there are “very sensitive discussions” taking place with Hamas regarding a U.S. proposal to end its war with Israel.
Ms. Leavitt reiterated President Trump’s timeline of three to four days for Hamas to agree to a ceasefire proposal. She said any announcements would come from Mr. Trump and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Mr. Trump set the deadline for Hamas to accept the proposal on Tuesday. It came after the president presented his 20-point plan, agreed upon by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.
The plan requires Hamas to release the remaining hostages, lay down arms and leave the Gaza enclave. In return, they would get back Palestinian prisoners from Israel and see an end to the fighting.
Qatari and Egyptian mediators have presented the plan to Hamas negotiators. They said they will study the plan, but didn’t provide a timeline.
If Hamas rejects the proposal, Mr. Trump said he would let Israel “go and do what they have to do” with its ongoing military operation.
