The Justice Department has fired Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director and staunch Trump opponent James Comey.
Ms. Comey was serving as a prosecutor in the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office and worked on a string of high-profile cases, including against Jeffrey Epstein and his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell.
The Justice Department didn’t immediately provide a comment about Ms. Comey’s firing. Her dismissal follows the news revealed this month that the department is investigating Mr. Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan over their instigation of the discredited Trump-Russia collusion probe that plagued President Trump’s first term.
Ms. Comey’s departure also follows her leading role in prosecuting Sean “Diddy” Combs on sex trafficking and racketeering charges. The costly case resulted in the jury finding Combs not guilty on the most serious charges.
Earlier this year, her father was questioned by the FBI after posting a picture on his social media account of beach rocks spelling out “86 47,” an alleged reference to killing Mr. Trump.
In 2022, Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison following her conviction on sex trafficking charges. Epstein was found dead in his New York City jail cell in 2019 before he could be prosecuted, also on sex trafficking charges. Authorities ruled his death a suicide.
