Elon Musk said the work being done by the Department of Government Efficiency will continue even though his time as a special government employee has come to an end.
Mr. Musk, donning a shirt that says “The Dogefather” and standing next to President Trump in the Oval Office, said: “This is not the end of DOGE. It’s really just the beginning.”
He said he still expects to achieve a trillion dollars in savings for the federal government, but it can’t be done in only a few months.
The DOGE website estimates that $175 billion has been saved.
The Tesla CEO compared DOGE’s efforts to Buddhism: “It’s like a way of life.”
“It’s permeating throughout the government, and I’m confident that over time, we will see a trillion dollars of savings,” he said.
Mr. Trump handed Mr. Musk a giant golden key that he said he only gives to “very special people.”
He had warm words for Mr. Musk, calling him “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced.”
“He stepped forward to put his very great talents into the service of our nation, and we appreciate it,” Mr. Trump said. “And just want to say that Elon has worked tirelessly, helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reform program in generations.”
Mr. Musk said he’ll continue to be a friend and adviser to Mr. Trump and looks forward to being back in the Oval Office.
