A Michigan judge was left stunned when a man joined a courtroom Zoom call over his charge of driving with a suspended license — and made the interjection while driving.
Washtenaw County Judge J. Cedric Simpson, presiding over the case, displayed a surprised expression when Corey Harris, 44, appeared on the screen behind the wheel. “Mr. Harris, are you driving?” the judge inquired, as reported by MLive.com.
Mr. Harris confirmed he was indeed behind the wheel.
“I’m pulling into my doctor’s office, actually,” he said on a video of the Zoom call.
After Mr. Harris parked, Judge Simpson said he was violating the law.
“So maybe I don’t understand something. This is a driving with a suspended license [case],” the judge said to Mr. Harris’ lawyer. “And he was just driving. And he didn’t have a license.”
Mr. Harris’ attorney tried to explain, but the judge was having none of it, saying, “No, I’m looking at his record. He doesn’t have a license.”
“I don’t even know why he would do that,” Judge Simpson said in the video posted by CBS News before revoking Mr. Harris’ bond and sentencing him to jail time — effective immediately.
“Defendant is turning himself into Washington County Jail by 6 p.m. today,” Judge Simpson declared.
“Oh my God,” Mr. Harris said.
