NextImg:Jimmy Kimmel says he got Italian citizenship as exit plan due to Trump policies

Jimmy Kimmel recently said he got Italian citizenship in case he wanted to leave the U.S. over President Trump’s policies.

On comedian Sarah Silverman’s podcast, she raised the subject by saying, “A lot of people I know are thinking about where they can get citizenship.” Mr. Kimmel, host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” responded that he already has Italian citizenship.

“And what’s going on is, as bad as you thought it was going to be — way worse. It’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable. Like I feel like it’s probably even worse than he would like it to be,” Mr. Kimmel said, alluding to the first few months of the second Trump administration.

The late night host has been a vocal critic of Mr. Trump, and vice versa.

In a Truth Social post in July following the announcement that CBS host Stephen Colbert’s show “The Late Show” would be going off the air in May 2026, the president said, “the word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes.”

“These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television. It’s really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!” Mr. Trump wrote.

Mr. Kimmel announced his new dual citizenship to a crowd at the Italian consulate in Los Angeles in June, according to Italian news agency ANSA. Mr. Kimmel was eligible to get Italian citizenship through his grandmother, who was born in Italy.

If he decided to leave the U.S., Mr. Kimmel would not be the first U.S. celebrity to permanently relocate to Europe. Ellen DeGeneres has moved to the U.K. and Rosie O’Donnell, whose enmity with Mr. Trump dates to before his time in office, moved to Ireland.
