Taxpayers have a one-day reprieve for any payments or returns that are supposed to be due on Thursday, the IRS said, citing the national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter.

Carter died last week at age 100. His body is lying in state in the U.S. Capitol through Thursday morning, when it will be taken to Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral.

The IRS said that because President Biden declared Thursday a day of remembrance, taxpayers are excused from any deadlines that fall on that day.

“The one-day extension applies to any return required to be filed with the IRS on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. It also applies to any required federal tax payment originally due on that day,” the agency said.
