A Jewish man is expected in court Monday after he was accused of shooting at two complete strangers in Miami Beach because the men appeared to be Palestinians — despite both victims turning out to be Jewish themselves.
Miami Beach police said officers took Mordechai Brafman, 27, into custody on attempted murder charges following the Saturday night shooting where the suspect told investigators he caught a glimpse of “two Palestinians and shot and killed both” while he was driving through the city.
Authorities said Mr. Brafman was arrested at his home a short while after the unprovoked attack.
Court documents said the victims escaped the shooting with minor wounds to their shoulder and forearm. Authorities said Mr. Brafman fired 17 rounds at their vehicle.
Police did not identify the victims, but multiple media outlets said the survivors are Ari Rabey and his father. The two men were visiting from Israel.
“Dear Jews, we need your help. Me and my father are on vacation in Miami. We were in the car on Saturday night. A van stopped next to us and started shooting dozens of bullets at us. We live in a miracle,” Mr. Rabey wrote in a Facebook group called Israelis in South Florida, according to WSVN-TV.
The Times of Israel reported that Mr. Rabey further claimed he and his father were the victims of an antisemitic attack.
